Former MLBer Raul Mondesi Sentenced To Eight Years In Prison
Vincent Laforet/Allsport Raul Mondesi, who played 13 years in the big leagues, has been sentenced to eight years in prison in his native Dominican Republic for political corruption.
A three-judge panel convicted Mondesi of corruption and mishandling of public funds dating to his 2010–16 mayorship of his hometown, San Cristobal, a city of 275,000. Mondesi was also forbidden from holding public office for 10 years, and fined 60 million pesos, the equivalent of $1.27 million USD.
Mondesi, the 1994 rookie of the year, played seven years with the Dodgers before spending the remainder of his career with the Blue Jays, Yankees, Diamondbacks, Pirates, Angels and Braves, before retiring in 2005. His son, Raul A. Mondesi, currently plays for the Royals.
