Here Is Bob Costas's Sanctimonious, Horseshit Editorial On Jovan Belcher
Here's Bob Costas dialing the smarm up to 11 in this referendum on perspective and sports by way of the Kasandra Perkins/Jovan Belcher murder-suicide. "Please," Costas intones, "those who need tragedies to continually recalibrate their sense of proportion about sports would seem to have little hope of ever truly achieving perspective." Costas then transitioned to a quote from Jason Whitlock, who is receiving more backhanded compliments this evening than perhaps ever before.
Bob Costas got on his phone books and condescended to a national audience about perspective—a glorified sports columnist editorialized on the Second Amendment during a fucking football game while pitting himself against those without perspective. It is so laughably out of touch it almost has to be satire.
We spent a good portion of the day wondering how this very mixed up story would be treated. Jovan Belcher, who was clearly troubled, murdered his girlfriend and then killed himself. It is both sad and abhorrent. But it is only relevant, unfortunately, to many of us because he is an athlete. So how does the team react? Will they mourn him? Honor him? Is that appropriate? How will media paint the picture? These are all interesting questions to expose to a national audience. Instead the day ended with just another angry old guy yelling from his porch.
