Police: Jim Irsay Was Arrested With A Briefcase Full Of Pills And Cash

Colts owner Jim Irsay had "numerous" bottles of prescription pills and more than $29,000 in cash on him when he was arrested last week, according to arrest reports obtained by the Indianapolis Star.

Irsay's Toyota Highlander was pulled over around 11:40 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, after an officer saw him driving erratically. He was driving 10 mph in a 35 mph zone, the officer wrote, and on two occasions came to a complete stop in the middle of the road. At that point the officer pulled alongside.

"I asked him if he knew why I had pulled him over. Irsay advised that he was trying to find his house and gets confused with what road it is located on."

The officer described Irsay as "disoriented," wrote that his speech was "slow and slurred" and his eyes "red and watery."

Officers attempted to perform sobriety tests on Irsay, but had to cut some of them short. While receiving instructions for the horizontal gaze nystagmus test (following a target from side to side), Irsay was unable to stand with his feet together. He was also unable to walk a straight line, being unable to stand heel-to-toe without two officers supporting him for fear he would fall.

Asked to recite the alphabet from "C" to "N," Irsay did as told, but then started again and went through the entire alphabet. "After reciting the letter Z," the officer wrote, "Irsay recited the lettering I, N and G."

After Irsay was taken to jail (where he refused a blood test, which means a mandatory one-year suspension of his drivers' license), police searched his vehicle. They discovered $29,029 in cash, located in a metal briefcase on the passenger's seat, one of two laundry bags on the floor of the vehicle, and in Irsay's wallet. In the briefcase and two laundry bags they found "numerous prescription medication bottles containing pills...various color and kinds of pills."

The arrest reports don't specify the type of pills, but the preliminary charges facing Irsay classify them as Schedule IV substances.

Irsay faces four counts of felony drug possession and one misdemeanor count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He had a hearing scheduled for yesterday, after his attorney requested a cancellation because Irsay is in a rehab clinic, his next court date has been postponed indefinitely.
