The Packers Are 9-0, And The 1972 Dolphins Are Already Insufferable About It
The Dolphins, the only perfect team in NFL history, famously breaks out the champagne toast when the last undefeated team loses their first game. This would not happen if reporters didn't flock to Mercury Morris's house every time the last undefeated team loses, but c'est les médias.
Morris, the most outspoken member of Perfectville, is singing a different tune. He actually likes the Packers!
"If they get to 10-0, which they probably will, I'm going to send Aaron Rodgers one of my CDs," he promises. Said CD is a song about his perfect season. But the reason Morris is behind Green Bay is that they're not nearly as Hollywood as the last team to come close.
"I have nothing but good things to say about the Packers. If they [end up] in our neighborhood, they're a credit to the sport. They don't have a bunch of guys out there who view themselves as entertainers. I didn't like the way [the Patriots] came across [four years ago]. They thought it was just a formality…They were too much 'in your face.' They wanted you to bow down to them and kiss the king's ring."
Morris also wants to make clear that his perfect season would be more important than the Packers' because it came first, even though Green Bay would have to win two more games to get it. Magnanimous, in a dick sort of way. But if you had any doubts that these Dolphins still consider themselves the class of sporting, nay, human history, just ask to guard Bob Kuechenberg:
"Nobody could conceive an undefeated season would ever have been done by mortals. Only Zeus, Greek gods, and Don Shula have been able to do it."
