The Ryan Giggs Affair Reaches An Apotheosis Of Stupidity
Remember how everybody knows Ryan Giggs had an affair with Imogen Thomas, but they couldn't say it because of the dreaded Super Injunction? So, yeah, that Super Injunction is still in place today, but that isn't stopping every single English newspaper from sticking his name and mug all over their front pages.
We've hammered this pretty hard (related: Giggs! Giggs! Giggs!), and we don't even particular care about who's sleeping with whom over there. Partly out of some solidarity with our muckracking English brethren, and partly to highlight the absurdity of the whole thing.
You want absurd? Fans chanted his name during Man United's match yesterday. A Scottish newspaper out and out outed him, because they're not English and don't have to listen to the Injunction. We wrote "Ryan Giggs had an affair" thirteen times in a 300-word post.
So the status quo stayed until today, when Giggs's name entered the public record thanks to the one person who isn't subject to the Super Injunction: a member of parliament. Said MP John Hemming:
"Mr Speaker, with about 75,000 people having named Ryan Giggs it is obviously impracticable to imprison them all."
And that was it.
The floodgates opened, with every newspaper in the country not necessarily reporting that Ryan Giggs had an affair, but reporting that an MP named him in conjunction with the court-ordered muzzle. It's the same dumb dance that we've been doing for months, but at least it's out in the open now. To some extent anyway: Monday evening, the High Court again refused to overturn the Super Injunction, even as a judge on his way home could pick up any number of paper with Giggs's face splashed across their front pages.
