Tiger Woods Actually Offends Someone
This image was lost some time after publication. After he failed to chase down Phil Mickelson in The Masters over the weekend, Tiger Woods told reporters: "I putted atrociously today. Once I got on the greens I was a spaz." We blanched when we heard him use the term "spaz," if just because that's pretty much what every grade school teacher called us when we were kids.
But apparently — and Brit readers, help us out here — in England the term is considered incredibly offensive, referring to disabled people as "spastics." Woods apologized last night, though we're pretty certain he had no idea what he was apologizing for.
Gelf points out that many U.S. papers edited the term, or just printed it all together, either helping Woods out or not realizing the word was offensive. We personally were also not aware of the offensive connotations of the word, but we weren't going to use it anyway, because we are not a surfer.
