Unconscionable Neymar Goal Highlights A Very Brazilian Night Of Soccer
We grab your attention with this, Neymar's first of two scores on the night, a one-of-a-kind run through the Flamengo defense. But we really wanted to highlight the entirety of one of the more thrilling games in recent memory. (If you've got 90 minutes to kill, the whole match is on YouTube).
Santos and Flamengo, Neymar and Ronaldinho. It could have been something of a changing of the guard of in the Brasileirão, and it certainly seemed it after Santos went up 3-0 on Neymar's clinical vivisection of the backs. But Flamengo was able to tie it up before halftime. That's Brazilian soccer in a nutshell (or nutmeg, as it were): fantastic, electrifying, gorgeous...with a complete lack of defense.
Neymar's second goal briefly put Santos back on top, but old man Ronaldinho, his European days behind him, still has something in the tank. His second and third goals gave Flamengo the unlikely 5-4 win, spurring delirious newspaper editors to run headlines like this.
But it all comes back to Neymar, who even in defeat provided an international YouTube moment for the ages. Everybody's talking about Qatar 2022, but Brazil 2014 is nearer than we realize. Would you bet against the 19-year-old Neymar taking the Golden Boot at both tournaments?
