Where Do Our Winter Olympians Come From?
This morning, the Washington Post published a map and list of the home states of the U.S.'s Winter Olympians. Commenter Jessica Minton wasn't a fan, so she took the data and created her own interactive map that breaks down the states' athletes by gender and by sport.
There are some expected figures here—the biggest quantities of athletes come from the more populous cold-weather states. But there are anomalies, some more explainable than others. New York and Minnesota skew overwhelmingly male due to the number of men's hockey players they've produced—and in Minnesota's case, the male curlers too. But why does Vermont produce such a high proportion of female skiers to male ones, while Colorado is the opposite?
Go play around with the map. And step it up, New Mexico. If Arizona can contribute, you can too.
