Don Imus Just Can't Quit You
If you prefer your radio hosts with faces like a 90-year-old saddle, then it's time to rejoice: Don Imus is back on the air! Was it really only eight months ago that the infamous "nappy-headed hos" comment about the Rutgers women's basketball team sent the nation into a tither? Well, he's back, on WABC-AM, with a new, diverse cast of sidekicks, including a black woman!
Imus apologized Monday again to the players. "I will never say anything in my lifetime that will make any of these young women at Rutgers regret or feel foolish that they accepted my apology and forgave me," he said. "And no one else will say anything else on my program that will make anyone think that I didn't deserve a second chance." While saying he had learned his lesson, he added — to applause from the live audience at Manhattan's Town Hall: "The program is not going to change."
Listening to Don Imus is what I suppose it would be like to poke Wilford Brimley with a stick. Assorted grumbling, then a story about how phone calls once cost a nickel. But all that becomes quickly tiresome, doesn't it? Well, if he's your cup of tea, now you can go nuts!
Dennis Miller and Don Imus, both with their own shows. This truly is the Golden Age of radio.
