Earthquake Interrupts Padres Game
A 5.7 earthquake struck during the eighth inning of last night's San Diego/Toronto tilt. Guess God isn't a fan of interleague play.
It was a minor quake, and fans cheered as the PA announcer told everyone to stay calm. The players had a little more trouble:
That's not a natural occurrence," said Padres left fielder Scott Hairston. "Well, yes it is a natural occurrence. But it's a little unsettling to go back on the field after something like that."
Others, like John Buck, in full catcher's gear, didn't even notice anything was amiss.
I didn't even get to feel it," Buck said. "All of a sudden [Headley] stepped out and I was like, 'What's going on?' He was like, 'It's an earthquake. You don't feel it?' I was like, 'Man, I didn't even feel it.' Downsy didn't feel it. All the guys in the infield said they didn't feel it. They said you could feel the bench sway. That's kind of a weird thing."
All in all, a funny little footnote. The quake did minor damage, and there were no injuries reported. Certainly nothing like the famous 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which struck during the Bay Area World Series:
