Aaron Hernandez Moved To Isolation After Fighting Handcuffed Inmate
Aaron Hernandez will spend 30 days in a special isolation unit at a Bristol County jail, after an altercation with a fellow inmate. He will spend 23 hours a day in his cell, even taking his meals there, and will be in restraints every time he leaves.
NECN fills in the details of the fight, which took place on Tuesday right outside Hernandez's former cell. The other inmate was handcuffed at the time; Hernandez was not. (A fact first reported by TMZ.) The two had reportedly been verbally taunting each other in recent days, and Sheriff Thomas Hodgson said authorities need to figure out why the two were allowed to cross paths.
"We're investigating it now to find out why two inmates would have been out at the same time in that unit," said Hodgson.
That won't be a problem for the next month. Hernandez has been moved to a new location in the Bristol County House of Corrections. His cell looks very much the same ( NECN has a video tour of the room and the unit), but some privileges have been revoked. Whereas he was formerly able to take meals in the cafeteria, he must now eat in his cell. And for his one hour of recreation time outside each day, he must now wear handcuffs, a waist chain, and leg irons.
Yesterday was a rough one for the former Patriots tight end. On the same day he got cozy in his new cell, he was sued by family members of two men killed in a 2012 drive-by shooting. No charges have been brought in the double-murder of Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado outside a Boston nightclub, but Hernandez reportedly remains the prime suspect.
