Did Jaxson Dart Just Reveal the Giants’ Next Head Coach on Live TV?
The internet might not be great for many things.
But it is halfway decent at lip reading.
During Thursday night’s Fiesta Bowl, Ole Miss football alumni and New York Giants starting quarterback Jaxson Dart was captured on the sideline by television cameras, seemingly making his prediction on who his next head coach will be.
"I don't know.. Harbaugh or Stefanski.. but I don't know."
Once you read the text and watch his mouth move, it’s hard to see anything other than that.
Now you understand why football coaches are constantly covering their mouths when speaking into the headset to deliver plays. This simple clip sent Giants fans into a frenzy, believing that they could be landing a prominent coach this cycle.
The Giants already had two meetings with Kevin Stefanski, who was just fired from the Cleveland Browns on Monday. New York is also expected to meet with ex-Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, who is taking the weekend before coordinating interviews with any team.
Despite their recent struggles, the Giants are thought to have one of the most attractive head coach openings. Dart is a big reason behind that, as the organization invested a first-round pick into him.
Dart impressed during his rookie season, throwing 15 touchdown passes to just five interceptions. He found himself in concussion protocol one too many times, but hopefully the 22-year-old can learn to not take as many hits.
The Giants also have a nice defense with complementary pieces offensively in Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo already set in stone. They also have the No. 5 overall selection in the upcoming NFL Draft.
But now, Dart has played Giants fans into an uncomfortable situation.
Certainly, Harbaugh is the best candidate available. He spent 18 seasons with the Ravens, winning a Super Bowl and only finished below .500 three times. Stefanski could be an attractive option as well, as he won Coach of the Year twice in six years and led the Browns to the postseason both of those seasons.
If they hire anyone other than Stefanski or Harbaugh… won’t things feel a bit awkward?
What if they fall in love with Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph? Or what if Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak wants to mold Dart the same way he’s conquered the NFC with Sam Darnold?
Those would feel underwhelming, especially if the starting quarterback said Harbaugh or Stefanski.
But that’s the thing.
We don’t know for sure if that’s what he said.
