Aaron Rodgers Chose New York Jets Over Vice Presidency & Found The Fountain of Youth
After rupturing his Achilles on his first series with the New York Jets, it seemed inevitable that Aaron Rodgers would have a long, drawn out comeback story.
However, this offseason, the former fill-in Jeopardy! host was presented with a unique opportunity that would’ve pulled him away from the game of football...
Becoming Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s vice president.
RFK reportedly offered Rodgers a spot on the ticket, but Rodgers declined. Somewhat surprisingly, he chose the game of football over an opportunity to create bigger, more bizarre, national headlines in a way that only Rodgers has become so good at. It's going to be a crazy election season again, and Rodgers could've had his name in the thick of the circus.
“I love Bobby, we had a couple of really nice conversations,” Rodgers said of his meetings with RFK. “But there were really two options which were retire and be his VP or keep playing.”
“And I wanna keep playing.”
Rodgers is 40 years old and coming off of a brutal injury. In a stacked AFC headlined by Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson, Rodgers’ Jets will have a tall task to reach the mountaintop.
The Jets spent all offseason improving. They added free agent veteran wide receiver Mike Williams and left tackle Tyron Smith. They doubled down on supporting Rodgers during the NFL Draft, selecting offensive lineman Olu Fashanu and receiver Malachai Corley with their first two selections.
If anyone embraces a comeback, it’s Rodgers. Think of the countless times with the Green Bay Packers that he led game winning drives against improbable odds. This time, the game clock is not what’s working against Rodgers. It’s Father Time.
There was smoke at the end of last season that Rodgers was eyeing a return, which would have been lunacy after sustaining such a serious injury. There seems to be no question that he rehabbed this injury hard, and he is ready to prove that he’s still got it this season.
It sounds like he's back to true form during New York’s OTAs. Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich told the media that it’s as if he found the fountain of youth. The Jets seem sincerely excited to finally get a true dose of Rodgers this season.
“He’s got the same personality that pisses you off during the week then you love on Sundays,” Ulbrich said.
Jets fans are now hoping that Rodgers doesn’t piss them off on Sundays now that he’s committed to football, not politics, for the time being.
