All We Can Say Is, Crikey
This is probably not even considered inside the realm of sports, but when a guy in khaki shorts suddenly appears on your television wrestling a large emu — when no large emu wrestling had ever been on your television before — well, that's sports to us. We were saddened to learn of the death of "The Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin yesterday, as we always kind of enjoyed his deranged antics, even if the wondered whether or not the animals always did.
Above, we give you Irwin's "SportsCenter" commercial from earlier this year, which was legitimately clever and still makes us laugh a little. (We love that the Gator is rifling through papers when Irwin tackles him.)
There are many fine rememberences of Irwin floating around the web following his death on Sunday, but somehow, we'll always remember this one, spoken by Jack Hanna, director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio:
I never pictured a croc killing him, but I never pictured a stingray doing it, either. It's like me getting killed by a poodle.
If he's going to say that again at the eulogy, we are so there.
