Blogdom's Best: Cincinnati Bengals
This image was lost some time after publication, but you can still view it [object Object] . It might not — yet — have the online fanaticism and cachet of baseball, but the NFL and its fans are starting to catch up in the world of team-devoted blogs. To this end, Deadspin salutes these modem-addled souls and proudly presents Blogdom's Best, given to the most outstanding blog for each NFL team. There are fewer than there are for baseball, but they're out there, if you look. If you would like to nominate a blog (yours, even) for selection, just let us know at [email protected]. Today: The Cincinnati Bengals.
Those who are old enough will never forget where they were that fateful day in 1981 when NFL history was made — when the Cincinnati Bengals trotted out their new tiger-stripe uniforms. Sure you were scared, we all were. But eventually we learned to live with them, just as we did with the Houston Astros rainbow jerseys. And Boy George. How did the Bengals' varicose pumpkin, nightmare-inducing uniforms come to be? Well, we did a little research. Here's our theory: May 17, 1981: The musical Cats debuts, in London. Sept. 6, 1981: Bengals unveil new stripy, catlike uniforms. We rest our case. Just consider yourselves very, very lucky that the Bengals lost the Super Bowl that season to the 49ers, preventing this trend from spreading — you yourself could be wearing pointy ears and have a tail sticking out of your ass as you read this. But enough about fashion. Let's discuss those wacky, crazier-than-Renfield-in-the-movie-"Dracula" Bengals fans. Guys like Greg Gall, and Bootsy Collins. We salute you, Cincinnati faithful.
3. Bengals Nation. Spot-on commentary with an odd, sometimes perverted twist. Definitely rated R. We wish there were more sports blogs like this. 2. Eye of the Tiger. The author misspelled his own name in the logo, which is one of the reasons we love it. Homemade Bengals commentary, every day. 1. Bengals Zone. If you can read only one Bengals blog (and if that's indeed the case, please contact us and explain), this would be the one. This blog within a news site has it all.
