Blogdom's Best: Detroit Lions
This image was lost some time after publication. It might not — yet — have the online fanaticism and cachet of baseball, but the NFL and its fans are starting to catch up in the world of team-devoted blogs. To this end, Deadspin salutes these modem-addled souls and proudly presents Blogdom's Best, given to the most outstanding blog for each NFL team. There are fewer than there are for baseball, but they're out there, if you look. If you would like to nominate a blog (yours, even) for selection, just let us know at [email protected]. Today: The Detroit Lions.
Did you know: The Detroit Lions played in the first-ever Arena Football game? It's true. They were the Portsmouth Spartans then and were to meet the Chicago Bears in the NFL Championship game in 1932. But due to a blizzard, the game was moved indoors, from Wrigley Field to Chicago Stadium. With only enough room for an 80-yard field, some say it was the first Arena Football game. Oh, the Bears won 9-0, so perhaps it wasn't. After some glory in the 1950s (three NFL titles), the Lions have hit a bit of a dry streak. That is, only one playoff victory since 1957 — a streak of futility matched only perhaps by the Washington Generals and the Italian army. It's said that Bill Buckner spends his summers in Detroit just to feel better about himself. This is how bad it is among Lions fans — they are calling for the team to sign Terrell Owens. Yes, desperation clings to the city like a moist blanket, but these fans hang in there. Just look at their blogging community — one of the best in the NFL. Here are our picks: 3. Detroit Lions Weblog. We love a blog that looks like a blog, calls for the immediate dismissal of all top executive and coaching personnel and throws around terms like "horrific," "fraud" and "Teddy Lehman." 2. Lion Backer. A variety of writers keep tabs on everything Lions, including something called "Damage Report," which we assume is a weekly feature. 1. Lions Den. It's a blog, it's a news site, it's the choice destination of Lions fans everywhere. Come to think of it, are there any Lions fans outside of Michigan? We've never actually seen one.
