Bob Broeg, R.I.P.

If you'll indulge us a little here, we have to comment on the passing of longtime . He covered St. Louis sports — and, of course, the Cardinals — for 60 years, starting out as the beat reporter for the St. Louis Browns. He wrote more than 20 books about St. Louis and the Cardinals, including the first grownup book we ever read: Bob Broeg's Redbirds: A Century Of Cardinals' Baseball, published in 1981, with a final chapter looking at the "future of the Cardinals," picturing Keith Hernandez and Garry Templeton.

In college, we wrote for the Post-Dispatch, and one day, our byline was on the same page as Bob Broeg's. It was one of our absolute greatest moments. We know if Bob Broeg read Deadspin, he'd almost certainly hate it, but that's OK too. There was no need for the admiration to go both directions. And now that Jack Buck, Bob Broeg, Busch Stadium and the Cardinals on KMOX are all gone, we're not even sure we'll recognize the team next year.
