Body Of Missing Ultrarunner Micah True Found In New Mexico Wildnerness

After going missing last Tuesday, searchers found the body of Micah True in New Mexico's Gila National Forest Saturday evening at around 6 p.m. True was featured in the book Born to Run about a reclusive Native American tribe, the Tarahumara, who "have practiced techniques that allow them to run hundreds of miles without rest and chase down anything from a deer to an Olympic marathoner..."

True was staying at the Wilderness Lodge in Gila Hot Springs, N.M., and left for a run Tuesday with little else than a water bottle—leaving behind most of his belongings, including his dog.

Before True went missing, [Lodge co-owner Jane] Bruemmer and her husband were heading to Silver City, N.M., a town about 40 miles away from the lodge, but True had planned to stay until Wednesday, when he was to depart for Phoenix to visit his girlfriend. So the couple bid him goodbye, leaving a friend to watch the lodge while they were away, Bruemmer said.

But the friend told the Bruemmers that True never returned from his run on Tuesday, and that "the guests were worried," she said. So she and her husband, Dean, called the state police Wednesday morning, and they launched a search in the area, where the temperature can drop below freezing at night.

The cause of death is still unknown and likely will remain so until Monday, but officials have indicated that there did not appear to be any signs of trauma.
