Mandatory Credit: Tim Fuller-Imagn Images Cam Talbot stopped 40 shots in his first start for Detroit as the host Red Wings notched a 3-0 win over the Nashville Predators on Saturday night.
Talbot, who signed a two-year contract as a free agent, collected his 32nd career shutout.
J.T. Compher, Andrew Copp and Dylan Larkin each scored for the Red Wings.
Juuse Saros, who missed the Predators' opener with a lower-body injury, made 19 saves.
Nashville forward Filip Forsberg played the 700th game of his career.
Detroit forward Christian Fischer suffered an upper-body injury and did not play in the third period.
Both teams lost their openers, with the Predators falling to the Dallas Stars, 4-3, and the Wings dropping a 6-3 decision to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Nashville had a big advantage in shots on goal in the first period but Talbot made 16 saves to keep the game scoreless. In contrast, Saros made eight saves.
Both teams had a power-play opportunity in the opening period. Detroit defenseman Ben Chiarot was sent off for hooking and Nashville forward Steven Stamkos was whistled for slashing.
The deadlock was broken at 1:02 of the second period. Compher, unchecked in front of the net, redirected Chiarot's shot from the left point past Saros. Moritz Seider collected the second assist.
The Predators killed a Jeremy Lauzon penalty midway through the period. Detroit did the same later in the period after Dylan Larkin spent two minutes in the box for high sticking.
Nashville was awarded another power play in the final minute of the second when Seider was called for tripping. Talbot robbed Jonathan Marchessault on a rebound in the closing seconds of the period.
Detroit made it 2-0 at 6:35 of the third. Lucas Raymond pushed the puck toward the net and Nashville defenseman Alexandre Carrier was unable to clear it from the crease. Copp then tapped the puck past Saros. Simon Edvinsson picked up the second assist.
Larkin added an empty-net goal in the final minute to secure the victory.
