Cubs DFA C Yan Gomes, sign Tomas Nido

The Chicago Cubs will have a new look behind the plate after designating Yan Gomes for assignment and signing fellow catcher Tomas Nido to a major league deal on Wednesday.
Playing in his 13th big-league season, the 36-year-old Gomes was hitting just .154 with two home runs and seven RBIs through 34 games.
"It was a tough decision," Chicago manager Craig Counsell said. "Yan is a great teammate and an important person in the clubhouse. But in the end, we just felt like we had to make an attempt to try to get more production out of the catching spot."
Before signing with the Cubs, Nido, 30, played 32 games for the Mets this year before being released on Monday. He hit .229 with three homers and eight RBIs during his time with New York.
Chicago also traded for catcher Ali Sanchez, sending cash considerations to the Miami Marlins in return.
Sanchez, 27, hasn't played in the majors since 2021, when he went 2-for-4 in two games with the St. Louis Cardinals.
In another move, the Cubs put Keegan Thompson on the paternity list and recalled fellow right-hander Porter Hodge from Triple-A Iowa.
