I was a little bit worried about those Giants fans who had to leave Monday’s game in shame after one of them accidentally grabbed a fair ball. Fortunately, I was able to talk to Travis, the dude who made the mistake, and he assures me that they are doing just fine.
Most importantly, Travis wants everyone to know that the theories about his relationship to the woman who was with him that have been floated by commenters and other internet rascals are not true. The lady is not Travis’s sidepiece, she’s his fiancée. She’s also a huge Giants fan, and Travis got those tickets so that she could experience a game from the front row for the first time in her life.
As for why they were both so devastated, Travis tells me it’s because they specifically talked about not interfering with a fair ball before the game. “A security guy came up to us before the game started and told us that we’d be kicked out if we touched a fair ball,” Travis said.
“Honestly, I thought it was foul, but once I grabbed it I knew it right away. Nobody wants to be that guy. I leaned down to my fiancée and just said, ‘Honey, I love you, and I’m sorry but we’re getting kicked out now.’”
The couple didn’t stay sad for long, though. “We were laughing about it by the time we hit the gate,” Travis told me. “My phone was blowing up within 15 minutes. All my friends and family were giving me a hard time, but it was lighthearted.”
The only person who had anything bad to say to the couple was a guy sitting about six or seven seats down from them. “He just went ballistic. Calling us all kinds of names and cursing at us,” said Travis. It is Deadspin’s opinion that Travis and his fiancée are cool, and that the guy who yelled at them is a dick.
