Alex Cobb Struck Out Every Batter In An Inning And Still Gave Up A Run
This highlights video of Alex Cobb's start last night features his 13 strikeouts in 4.2 innings, but it doesn't show the conclusion of the most interesting part of the night.
Here's what you will see in that video, though: in the third inning of the Rays-Padres game, Cobb strikes out Will Venable, but the third strike gets away from catcher Jose Lobaton, and Venable reaches first. Venable then successfully steals second as Chase Headley strikes out and nabs third as Carlos Quentin takes his first pitch.
At that point, the video stops being helpful. Right after Cobb strikes out Quentin, he balks, and Venable scores from third. The video then returns to show Cobb striking out Yonder Alonso. Got all that?
Although records prior to 1911 aren't complete, Cobb seems to be the first MLB pitcher to ever accomplish this bizarre feat. As it is a mixture of skill and errors, to Cobb, we say... congratulations?
(The Rays went on to win 6-3.)
