Mexican Fans Drill Costa Rican Soccer Player In The Head With Debris
Mexico played Costa Rica tonight at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City in a match everyone thought was Mexico's to lose. They didn't lose, but Mexico were frustrated by the plucky visiting side, and by the 78th minute, the score remained 0-0. That's when Costa Rica captain Bryan Ruiz ran over to take a corner kick, and when Mexican fans started throwing empty bottles and trash at the player.
One bottle struck him in the head. When that happened, Ruiz doubled over in pain and to further milk the clock, which further enraged the fans.
El Tri's hostile fans are known for throwing bags of piss and shit and whatever else they can get their hands on at opposing players, so all things considered, this episode could've been much worse. At the very least, Ruiz could've been badly hurt. But he wasn't, and Costa Rica were able to hold on for 12 more minutes and seven minutes of extra time to secure the draw. Mexico and Costa Rica are now on tied for first midway through the final CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying round, but the US Men's National team can take the lone top spot if they beat Panama tonight. The Americans are up at half, 1-0, following Jozy Altidore goal.
