The latest NBA-Netflix project shows just how little creativity is left in Hollywood

Netflix is teaming up with the NBA to do a basketball version of the NFL Quarterback Show series. Since Hollywood and sports are about copycatting what’s worked in the past, it’s no surprise the streaming service is immediately following up with a hoop’s version. Cameras will follow around five of the NBA’s brightest:  LeBron James, Jimmy Butler, Jayson Tatum, Domantas Sabonis and Anthony Edwards.

An NBA version of the QB show by Netflix was a no-brainer and something we all should’ve seen coming a mile away. Especially since it looks like a docuseries on the NBA Cup (aka In-Season Tournament) seems to be on the way as well. Seeing James’ name on this list shouldn’t be a surprise as he’s been the face of the NBA for what feels like forever.

It’ll be interesting to see how long it takes for this to turn into the King James show. Since the project is being produced by the King’s production company, along with Barack Obama and Peyton Manning’s, expect to get a heavy dose of James propaganda. Las Vegas sportsbooks should be taking bets on how many GOAT references make it on camera for episode one in reference to James.

Although, Bron Bron isn’t the only big personality that’ll be spotlighted in this series. There’s a good chance Butler could steal the show and you can guarantee we’ll get more than a cup full of “Big Face Coffee,” Butler’s brand. Tatum isn’t known for having a big personality, but the cameras seem to love his kid. So, he’ll likely get some screen time with pops, and Tatum is one of the best players in the Association, so fans will want to see more of him behind the scenes.

Sabonis feels like the wild card of the group as we don’t know a ton about his life off the court other than his father (Arvydas Sabonis) played for the Blazers. With Edwards, we probably know too much about his personal life and it’s interesting they’ve included him given some of the controversies he’s been involved in.

Overall, it’s not a bad bunch and follows Hollywood’s usual lack of creativity: Let’s just continue to do what we’ve done in the past. That doesn’t mean the show won’t be intriguing, informative or entertaining. It just means we’re clearly out of fresh ideas so let’s continue with the status quo.
