Oscar Pistorius Is "On The Verge Of Suicide," Says Close Friend
It's been nearly a month since track star Oscar Pistorius was charged with premeditated murder for the grisly Valentine's Day shooting death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, 29, and if those in his inner circle are to believed, the stress is starting to take its toll on the Olympian.
BBC is shooting a documentary called "Oscar Pistorius: What Really Happened?" about the 26-year-old's involvement in the Steenkamp's shooting. If you remember, Pistorius claimed to shoot his girlfriend through the bathroom door because he thought she was an intruder.
Among the interviewed for the program was one of Pistorius's closest friends, Mike Azzie, whom Pistorius affectionately calls Uncle Mike. Azzie told BBC that Pistorius is in the midst of a downward spiral.
"He has no confidence in his tone of voice," Azzie divulged, "and he is just a man that is almost like someone that is walking around in circles and doesn't know where he is going.
"I would say that, just speaking to him, that he is a broken man and that I would go as far to say that he would be on the verge of suicide. It really worries me."
Azzie says that Pistorius actually talks about Steenkamp quite often, asking his friends to pray for her and her family. But the Blade Runner is just a shell of himself after juggling grief, guilt, and fear, not to mention exorbitant legal fees. Huge endorsements like Nike and Oakley have broken with the suspected murderer. Bail set the runner back around $100,000, and he's already had to spend over $300,000 on legal fees. ITV reports that Pistorius is already selling off his personal belongings, including his racehorses. The trial hasn't even started yet.
The documentary has also covered the procedural side of the case. Johannesburg police requested phone records and are currently sifting through a "massive" number of texts on Steenkamp's phone.
According to the , the documentary also reveals Pistorius showing bravado in front of the law. One officer told him, "You could go to jail for a very long time, Oscar." The Olympian responded, "I'll survive. I always win."
"Oscar Pistorius: What Really Happened?" airs tomorrow.
