Terrapins Running Back Accused Of Wiretapping, Among Other Charges
University of Maryland sophomore running back Wes Brown was arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree assault, theft under $1,000 and illegal use of wiretapping, according to Testudo Times. Wait, what?
University of Maryland police spokesperson Sgt. Aaron Davis said College Park police received a call from the Baltimore Police Department, asking for help in locating Brown. Davis said they found Brown Wednesday night on Knox Road, and said Brown assaulted a police officer before running away. Davis also said the wiretapping charge came from recording police officers with his cell phone without their knowledge.
The wiretapping charge is a felony and seems a little severe for the way it was described, but Maryland is one of the states where all parties must consent to being recorded, so apparently Brown's recording is considered illegal. (As a matter of fact, the U.S. Justice Department recently wrote two letters to Maryland's district court supporting citizens' rights to film police officers on duty.) The charge still sounds very flimsy, though.
