World's Saddest Goalkeeper Also Has The World's Saddest Twitter Bio
This is Steve Harper, a 39-year-old goalkeeper in his first season for Hull City after being a fixture on the Newcastle United bench for the better part of 20 years, which included stints on loan elsewhere. He is, relatively speaking, baddish at his job.
The thing about baddish athletes is that when you're baddish, but not fully bad, you're allowed to linger, to hang around, and to waste away. Your body remains intact, as does your job, and maybe even your desire. But you're not a player, in the most important sense, which is that you actually play.
Twenty-one seasons in, Harper has only appeared in 265 matches, and he's now a man forced to stare down his own mortality, both on and off the pitch, and confront the regrets of his youth. Here is his current Twitter bio:
