Everything We Know About Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, The Still-At-Large Suspect
Police are still looking for 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon bombing suspect who remains at large after his older brother and alleged accomplice Tamerlan was killed in a shootout last night. This is everything we know so far about Dzhokhar.
Dzhokhar attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge, Mass. Dzhokhar was in the class of 2011, was on the wrestling team, and received a $2,500 scholarship from the city of Cambridge in 2011. His friends called him Jahar. Many of them have been speaking to the media this morning, describing him a regular chill guy.
Two former classmates called into CNN this morning to talk about Dzhokhar, and both described him as a normal high school kid who liked to drink, party, and smoke weed. Both expressed shock at Dzhokhar's involvement in the marathon bombings. One of them said that he and his friends even joked about how much Suspect 2 looked like Dzhokhar, as he was known to wear a backward hat.
BuzzFeed has also interviewed several of his former classmates, and they paint a similar picture:
"I didn't know Jahar extremely well but he was literally among the sweetest, most laid back guys I've ever known," said another student at Harvard who went to Cambridge Rindge and Latin and spoke on the condition of anonymity. "Always friendly and welcoming, I always felt comfortable hanging out with him."
Tsarnaev seemed even-keeled up until recently, the student said.
"In fact, as recently as November I played pick up basketball with him and he seemed like he was doing great at UMASS Dartmouth," the student said. "I don't know what changed since then but evidently it was something pretty big."
BuzzFeed also spoke to a manager at Harvard's Blodgett Pool, who confirmed that Dzhokhar was a lifeguard at the pool for two years, but was let go this past summer after not showing up for a few shifts.
Here is a blog post from another apparent classmate, which contains this picture of Dzhokhar from his high school prom:
UMass Dartmouth has confirmed that Dzhokhar is a registered student. His father, who spoke to the Associated Press this morning, said that Dzhokhar was a medical student and a second-year medical student and a "true angel."
