Ex-Dodgers Prospect Busted In Counterfeit Karaoke Scam
Bill Bene was a top five draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers and spent nine years in the minors—never making it to The Show. What's a baseball bust to do once his career ends? Rip off karaoke songs and get busted for not reporting the income on your taxes, of course.
On Thursday, the karaoke scheme crumbled as Bene plead guilty to tax fraud and copyright infringement related to stolen karaoke songs. As part of the plea deal, Bene admitted that from 2006 to 2010 he "illegally copied and sold karaoke songs on hard drives." Each hard drive reportedly held "Total Eclipse of the Heart," a collection of Journey's greatest hits and 121,990 other songs.
For shamelessly and embarrassingly ripping off actual artists' work for the amusement of drunken revelers, Bene will face up to eight years in jail.
