Here Are Both Of Last Night's 2OT Cockpunches
Playoff hockey overtime might be the single greatest thing in the sports world — assuming your team isn't involved. Then it's a war of nail-biting, heart-stopping attrition, destined to end in glory and highlight compilations for one side, and wondering why you even bothered staying up late for the other.
Above is Marion Gaborik picking up an assist on Jason Chimera's double OT winner. Gaborik doesn't play for the same team as Chimera. As Ranger goalie Henrik Lundqvist goes to cover the puck, Gaborik inexplicably pokes it away - directly to Chimera, who finds himself alone in the crease for the tap-in.
"I should've seen Hank earlier," Gaborik told NHL.com. "I saw the puck. I don't know if it was a rebound or something, but I saw it in front and just tried to clear it. I didn't see Hank went for it and when I just cleared it, I saw him at the last second. I tried to clear it, but I didn't see Chimera. I guess it hit him in the stomach because he was right there.
"I don't know. I should've just…I wish I would've seen Hank quicker and go for it."
For his part, Chimera called it "the best thing that ever happened to me, next to getting married and having kids."
A few minutes earlier in Tampa (yes, both home teams lost their 2OT games. That's got to be fun for fans in attendance), Pittsburgh's James Neal ended it with a bad angle shot. We're bringing you both announcing teams' calls, because the Penguins guys appear psychic, while the Lightning crew is despondent: "Oh no."
