For the third straight year, the New York Giants are 2-8.

That was the breaking point, as Giants head coach Brian Daboll was fired on Monday afternoon.

While New York had a promising season rolling when rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart took the reins from Russell Wilson, things have not improved enough for the head coach of the Giants to keep his job any longer.

Daboll’s firing comes after the Giants were defeated 24-20 by the Chicago Bears. But the Giants have blown four double-digit leads this season in four road losses.

Dart is in concussion protocol. Superstar wide receiver Malik Nabers was lost for the season due to a knee injury, and standout rookie running back Cam Skattebo will miss the remainder of this season due to an ankle injury.

All hope is lost for the Giants this season, so they waved the white flag on their head coach.

According to reports, Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will take over as New York’s interim head coach.

The thought process is likely a hopeful approach where Kafka could continue developing Dart once he clears protocol. In seven starts, Dart has thrown 10 touchdown passes to just three interceptions. The rookie quarterback has been good, but needs to be protected better, as Sunday’s game marked the fourth time he was evaluated for a concussion this season.

Truth be told, Daboll came into this season on the hot seat, and it’s a bit of a surprise that he survived this long. Dart’s instant success breathed life into New York football, but the losses stockpiling turned out to be too much.

Daboll will join former Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan as the first two casualties of this season. Similarly, Callahan could not squeeze enough juice out of No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward, which resulted in his firing.

While Daboll isn’t the sole reason for New York’s 2-8 record, the NFL is a results-oriented business. The losing became all too familiar, as Kafka will become the sixth Giants head coach since 2016.

This offseason, New York’s opening could be considered one of the most attractive landing spots for prospective head coaches.

While the Giants have not had much success, they’ve done a decent job stockpiling young talent through the draft. Not to mention, Dart’s promising start would be a compelling element, especially compared to other openings that might not have a long-term answer at quarterback.
