Jason Kendall Is Attempting A Comeback With The Royals
Jason Kendall hasn't played in the big leagues since his 118 games with the Royals in 2010. He hit .256/.318/.297 then. He was 36. He showed no signs of future promise. He looked finished, and had season-ending rotator-cuff surgery in September to prove it. So we thought we were free to send Kendall off as a once-explosive young catcher who deteriorated quickly and, with his giant contract, played a small role in ruining the Pirates.
But Jason Kendall doesn't buy that narrative. Jason Kendall doesn't think he's done. Jason Kendall knows he's got more in the tank. Jason Kendall knows he can hit .250—all singles—and play mediocre defense for any team that wants him.
Naturally, the one team that wants him is the Kansas City Royals. The Royals aren't really catching-poor: They were stuck with Brayan Pena and Humberto Quintero after young Salvador Perez's injury in March, but now Perez is back and raking. (The Royals designated Quintero for assignment after Perez came back, but not before he could do this on television.) They don't need Kendall, but, then again, no one does.
