Jelena Ostapenko Wins French Open For First WTA Tour Win Ever
Jelena Ostapenko earned her first WTA tour win in a big way: by dispatching Simona Halep 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 today in the French Open final. The Latvian is the first unseeded French Open women’s champion since 1933.
Ostapenko beat the third-seeded Halep despite entering the tournament ranked 47th in the world and having only previously competed in seven Slams. Ostapenko’s previous career highlight had been winning $50,000 at an ITP tour event in 2015.
