Last Night's Winner: The Taste Of Sports Fans When It Comes To Justin Bieber
The Bieb showed up at the Knicks game last night, and as celebrities are wont to do, was put up on the Jumbotron. The New York crowd's reaction was overwhelmingly boos. Glorious, glorious boos.
Usually, the crowd is receptive to the celebrities in the front row; they recognize that famous folk give MSG some of its cachet. Spike Lee on the Gardenvision? Huge cheers. One of the Sopranos actors who isn't James Gandolfini? Polite applause. Hell, even Jordan got a standing O when he first came back with the Bobcats a few years ago. But I've never heard near-unanimous boos ("The boos are from the guys, and the cheers are from the girls," chimed in Clyde Frazier) like what Bieber received.
Is it because he won a title with the Lakers last year, as TBJ opines? Probably not. Probably more like 20,000 people trying to secure their own street cred by publicly rejecting a pop star who's not even targeting their demographic anyway. That crying little girl at the end of the video? She's the target. Bullseye.
I'd be remiss in not mentioning that Biebs sat next to Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist. "Does that make you think less of Henrik?" my girlfriend asked me. Well, shit. Yeah, it kinda does.
