Level up IRL: How Gamers Are Using XP Systems to Get Fit
What if you gained XP instead of just sweating in the gym? Would it be more interesting to train? Everything is now being gamified, and the same goes for the fitness industry.
I don’t know which method is your favorite, but I prefer having levels instead of collecting points. Unlocking achievements while increasing my level seems like a fun thing to do while working out.
Is There a Good Gamified Fitness App?
Well, there isn’t a game that every game would like to play. The same goes for fitness apps, it won’t suit everyone.
The first thing to take into notice is your goal. Is it fat loss? Or do you want to get bulky like Baki? The majority of the applications are based on challenges and tracking.
Instead of looking for strictly fitness apps, check the “life improvement” type. One of the best examples is “Solo Leveller” where you do certain “healthy” tasks that will make you more active.
A trainer won’t recommend this because it’s just a fun thing to do when you are inactive. LevelUp: Fitness is also a great example. You finish quests like doing pushups, squats, etc., to increase your level.
Gamified Running Apps Are Too Fun
If you are a Marvel fan, the ZRX: Zombies Run app now has a Marvel collaboration. It actually has a storyline. The goal is to run, unlock achievements, characters, and become a hero in another world.
Zombies Run also collects data like the longest continuous run, distance, and time, which most apps have. But, you will also have supplies collected and chases escaped, which are part of the game.
Gaming as a Part of a Daily Routine
It’s true that spending too much time on your phone or PC isn’t great, but it’s something that we can’t avoid. A better question is how to adapt to it without impacting our health?
Yes, you’re completing workouts and tracking habits, but if you’re constantly checking your phone for XP or streaks, it’s a short line between motivation and obsession. The key is to use these apps as tools, not crutches. Set goals, log your progress, then disconnect.
