Michael Vick Still Can't Drive A Car Because Of Concussion Suffered Last Week
Nick Foles got the start today for the Eagles because Michael Vick is still recovering from a concussion he suffered against the Cowboys last week. Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder said "[h]e's had symptoms all week" and that he is "foggy."
According to USA Today, Vick is also suffering from the following symptoms.
• Still can't drive a car due to balance issues.
• Sleeps all day, can't sleep at night.
• Lethargic.
• Nauseous.
• Can't sit in meetings.
• Sensitive to light.
Burkholder says Vick is stuck in "Phase 1" of his recovery—unable to progress to workouts and exercise—and while that sounds scary, it may not be as bad as it sounds. Different people recover differently from concussions and each injury is itself different.
"We've had guys that have come out of Phase 1 immediately, and have been stuck in Phase 2. I've had guys who have gotten to Phase 3, and then 2 weeks later, they couldn't get out of Phase 3," Burkholder said. "There's no way to determine [how the recovery will progress]. We come back here Monday and he could be fine, and then I can progress him through the next couple of phases.
Whatever the phase, Michael Vick currently cannot perform what many of us would consider activities of daily living because of a concussion. He will likely recover to a point where he would be permitted to return to the field. What that point is and whether it will still be the same later in his life become less certain the more we learn about football and head injuries.
