Miguel Cotto Once KO'd A Salesman ... Over The Phone
• Boxing. Miguel Cotto retained his WBA welterweight championship with a unanimous decision over Shane Mosley in New York. The fight was so close that both of fighters landed exactly 248 punches. That's creepy. Cotto, who is now 31-0, took the judges' cards at 116-113, 115-113 and 115-113. Mosley, now 44-5 lifetime, politely disagreed.
• NCAA Men's Basketball. Tiny Mercer capped the upset hat-trick for the Atlantic Sun conference this week, shocking No. 18 USC 96-81 despite O.J. Mayo's 32-point college debut. Thursday, Gardner-Webb surprised No. 20 Kentucky on the Cats' home court, and Friday Belmont won at Cincinnati. Tomorrow, my rec league team, Touching Chris Kaman, will walk into Memphis and absolutely crush the No. 5 Tigers.
• Beach Soccer. Brazil won its second consecutive Beach World Cup and 11th title overall, beating Mexico 8-2 in the final yesterday. Uruguay finished third among the 16 nations, while land-locked Belarus watched jealously at home.
• World Cup Slalom. Skiing? On Deadspin? You're damn right! I love the slopes, dude. Marlies Schild, the defending World Cup champ, edged Nicole Hosp by 0.06 in difficult conditions because of heavy snowfall on the Gasselhoehe course. Schild has now won 14 World Cup slalom races and 16 overall, which is why I have a poster of her frolicking in the snow above by bed.
