Mandatory Credit: Anne-Marie Sorvin-Imagn Images In advance of moving to a summer-spring schedule starting in 2027, MLS will officially alter its secondary transfer window to run through September.
The league's primary transfer window will take place Jan. 26-March 26 this year, while the secondary window will run from July 13-Sept. 2. It is the first time in two decades, outside of the 2020 pandemic year, that the secondary window will extend into September.
The change aligns MLS with transfer windows of leagues around the world, most of which operate their seasons from the end of summer into the next spring.
FIFA also will require all three MLS teams in Canada to operate within registration periods set up by U.S. Soccer. Those teams are the Vancouver Whitecaps, Toronto FC and CF Montreal.
MLS revealed in November that it will no longer contest a full season within the same calendar year following the 2026 season, which starts Feb. 21 with a 13-game slate.
To fill a lengthy gap between the end of the upcoming regular season in November and the start of the 2027-28 season in the summer, MLS will conduct a short 14-game regular season from February to May 2027.
