North Carolina Tar Heels Football Already Trying To Find a Way To Fire Bill Belichick
The Bill Belichick era in Chapel Hill has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster.
In recent weeks, Belichick’s Gen Z girlfriend has been spotted all over the facility, he’s axed the Tar Heels Hulu docu-series, banished social managers for posting Drake Maye New England Patriots highlights and the program was recently smacked with some major NCAA violations.
North Carolina is 2-3 and the two victories have not been worth the headache fostered by Belichick and general manager Michael Lombardi. According to a report on Wednesday, UNC could potentially be looking to use the recruiting violations as terms to part ways with this entire experiment.
Andrew Jones of 247Sports, which is owned by CBS, reported that “potential exit strategy discussions” occurred on Wednesday morning in North Carolina. While it does not mean that the university is actively getting closer to firing Belichick, “preliminary conversations” about the possibility have taken place.
The goal of these conversations would be to minimize Belichick’s enormous buyout.
Belichick is only five games into his five-year, $10 million mega deal with the Tar Heels and North Carolina could already be looking for a divorce.
According to the report, the fast-rolling action to have discussions about Belichick’s future with the program stem from the potential rule violations that have been alleged.
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that a North Carolina assistant coach was suspended for providing extra benefits to player families. The report alleged that UNC players were selling unused game tickets that they received for free.
While these violations don’t seem too nefarious, the rules are the rules in the NCAA. It’s the reason why some of Belichick’s peers, including Nick Saban, could not escape the world of college football fast enough.
But Belichick signed up for this. He anticipated that he could handle this. And while selling a few tickets feels like a minor infraction, Jones is reporting that is just the tip of the iceberg.
“There are many other violations that have occurred,” Jones said in his report. “Many on the recruiting front.”
Belichick’s $10 million salary could be in jeopardy if the university finds a way to minimize his buyout as a result of these violations. His tenure has been a complete disaster, and that has almost nothing to do with how bad the actual product on the field has been.
