Oh, For The Calming, Sophisticated Atmosphere Of The Fenway Bleachers
Look, we don't need to tell you how rowdy it can get in the stands at the Boston Pops. It's always the same old story: The lout in the seat in front of you is going on and on about how Yo Yo Ma is the greatest living cello player, while the guy in back of you, a fan of Finnish virtuoso Anssi Karttunen, is doing a slow burn. Insults are exchanged. Of course everyone involved has had one or two Cabernet Cobblers before the performance. Then someone throws their Gucci umbrella, and it's on, baby!
Concert-goers, and even Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, were caught off-guard when a fight broke out on opening night at usually sedate Symphony Hall. Television video of the fight Wednesday night showed two men struggling in the balcony — one with his shirt pulled off — as several people stood around them. Witnesses said they heard a scream from the balcony, and the sound of chairs falling, then a second scream as the fight escalated.
We won't say exactly who was involved, but David Ortiz was very disappointed that he was unable to stick around for the Tribute to Rodgers and Hart.
