Say Goodbye To Mark McGwire Road Rage

"Driving the Mark McGwire Highway" sounds like a not-particularly-clever euphemism for a PED regimen, but St. Louisans have been doing it for a decade. Perhaps not for much longer.
In 1999, The Missouri Senate designated a stretch of I-70 in St. Louis the Mark McGwire Highway. (get it? Seventy home runs?) Obviously, apotheosizing McGwire is no longer in fashion. So yesterday, the Senate voted unanimously to re-rename that stretch for Mark Twain, a Missourian whose only controversial actions were to drop the n-word every couple paragraphs.
Republican Sen. Kurt Schaefer of Columbia asked if those getting the honors were alive or dead. Schaefer says it might be wise to name roads only for the deceased, because they can't do something worth changing the name over one day.
Burn!
For his part, McGwire says it was "a pretty cool honor" to drive down a highway named after him for 10 years. Just like it was pretty cool to be a baseball hero for about 7 years.
