Soccer Player Who Killed Fluffy, Defenseless Owl May Get Jail Time
Luis Moreno, the defender for Deportivo Pereira of Colombia's Primara A who kicked an opposing club's pet owl off the field on Sunday, could get up to three months of jail time for the incident. The owl was treated for traumatic stress at Zoosalud veterinary clinic in Barranquilla, Colombia, but died early this morning of respiratory arrest. Authorities intend to press charges on Moreno; according to a Bogotá radio station, "current animal protection laws allow the player to be jailed for 'one to three months and be fined between 5,000 to 50,000 pesos ($2.60 to $26).'" Moreno has publicly apologized and, if he knows what he's doing, will likely participate in a bird-kicking awareness campaign in the coming months. Among the already nixed mottos: "just to see if they can fly."
