The Milwaukee Brewers are the losingest National League team to still be mathematically alive for the postseason, clinging to the very bottom rung of the Wild Card chase with just seven games to go. ESPN gives them just a 16 percent chance of edging into that final spot. It’s all do-or-die from here on in in Milwaukee.
Travis Shaw got things started for the Brewers in the first inning today with a monster three-run dong that flew into the second deck:
This is not to denigrate newly crowned Red Sox opening day third baseman Travis Shaw, because Travis Shaw has had a killer spring, and no one’s really quite sure what to make of him. But teams usually need more than a hint of promise to bench a guy owed $72.4 million over the next four years. Not the Sox.
Red Sox center fielder Mookie Betts is an adept baseball man, as well as an extremely skilled bowler. What he’s not good at is driving a golf cart, apparently. He and Travis Shaw went golfing this afternoon, and they got a bit more amphibious than they wanted to.
