Texas splits with baseball coach David Pierce
Texas Head Coach David Pierce heads for the dugout ahead of the Longhorns' game against the Kansas Jayhawks, Thursday, May 16, 2024 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin. Texas parted ways with baseball coach David Pierce on Monday after eight seasons.
His dismissal comes after the Longhorns lost 10-2 to Louisiana at the College Station regional, ending their season June 2 with a 36-24 (20-10 Big 12) record.
"After the season, Coach Pierce and I had some time to visit about the year, the future of our program, where we are, and where we're headed," athletic director Chris Del Conte said Monday. "It was a difficult decision for us both, but we have mutually agreed that we should make a change. I am so grateful for Coach Pierce and all he has poured into our baseball program for the past eight years."
That includes a 295-162 record and Big 12 championships in 2018, 2021 and 2023. Texas played in the Men's College World Series in 2018, 2021 and 2022.
"CDC and I met after the season and we mutually agreed that the best thing for the program was to go in a different direction," Pierce, 61, said. "It's been an honor and privilege to lead this program for the last eight years. It certainly is a time I will always cherish as a coach."
USA Today reported that Pierce has two years remaining on his contract, which pays him $1.2 million per season, with 70 percent of his remaining base salary available to him.
Formerly the coach at Tulane, Pierce was hired to replace Augie Garrido in June 2016.
