The Daily Closer: Hey, What's With All The Old Guys?

Notes from a day in baseball:

• Glavine And Moyer Demand That You Get Off Their Lawn . Well, Imus is finally gone, but there are still plenty of old folk to watch on TV if you're into that sort of thing. There's boxing historian Bert Sugar, Beano Cook and of course Matlock reruns. Oh, and Tom Glavine and Jamie Moyer, who faced off on Thursday in one fine display of old. As Faith and Fear in Flushing pointed out, the two had 85 years, 543 wins and 7518.2 innings pitched between them; in fact becoming the oldest matchup of lefthanded starters in major league history. Glavine prevailed, notching his 292nd career win. Wasn't it just yesterday that the Padres' Greg Maddux won his 334th, against the Giants and the ancient one, Barry Bonds? All that was missing this week was Wilford Brimley finally inserting a persistent Robert Redford into the Knights' starting lineup. On Thursday, Glavine went six innings in the Mets' 5-3 win over the Phillies, surviving two homers by Jimmy Rollins in the first two innings. Glavine (2-1) is 41. Moyer, 44, allowed four runs, three earned, and four hits in six innings. Jose Reyes had a two-run single in the fourth for the winning margin.

• The Island Of Justin Morneau. Justin Morneau's walkoff homer in the ninth gave the Twins a 3-2 win over the Devil Rays at the Metrodome, which featured some mighty weird baserunning in the late innings. These things happen when you play indoors.

• Take That, World! Several Nationals fans unfastened nooses and climbed down from ladders as Jason Bergmann struck out eight over six innings, allowing just one hit, in a 2-0 win over John Smoltz and the red-hot Braves. Ronnie Belliard hit a go-ahead single in the eighth.

• Stupid Clever Angelos. No such heroics from the Royals, however, as Jay Gibbons singled home the winning run in the 10th in the Orioles' 2-1 victory.

• Stripes. We've said it all along: When Brandon Inge finally busts out, look out world!* Inge homered and drove in three runs, and Mike Maroth held Toronto to two runs over six innings as the Tigers beat the Blue Jays 5-4.

* = May not have said it all along.
