UFC's Kevin Vallejos Is the Real Deal After Dominant Finish of Josh Emmett
In what seems to be something emblematic of the state of MMA in 2026, UFC Vegas 114 was a really solid card, especially compared to the weak offering from UFC 326 one week ago. Several up-and-comers and rising contenders made their impact, but perhaps none more so than Kevin Vallejos.
Vallejos was taking on Josh Emmett in the UFC Vegas 114 main event. It was a battle of youth and experience. It was a battle of striking with volume and pressure versus power punching and wrestling capabilities.
On paper, it looked like a fight where Emmett was going to be a sacrificial lamb for Vallejos. But heading into the fight, there was some debate and doubt amongst MMA media, pundits, and fans.
Emmett entered the fight with four losses in five fights, a stretch that began with his interim featherweight title loss to Yair Rodriguez at UFC 284. But when you look at the stretch of losses, they aren’t actually bad. Ilia Topuria has now won gold in two weight classes, currently the lightweight champion. Lerone Murphy is undefeated and facing fellow undefeated fighter Movsar Evloev next week at UFC London to determine the next title challenger for Alexander Volkanovski. Youssef Zalal hasn’t lost a fight since 2021.
Vallejos, meanwhile, was just 3-0 in the UFC entering this fight. But his most recent fight result had been a worthy one – a highlight knockout of Giga Chikadze. On top of that, Vallejos has had just one loss in his MMA career – fellow UFC featherweight Jean Silva on Dana White’s Contender Series.
Despite the inexperience compared to Emmett’s resume, the fight showed Vallejos had what matters in a one-on-one fight – the timing, the speed, and the accuracy of strikes. Emmett’s losses are certainly not terrible, but it was also clear Father Time had caught up with him.
Emmett looked to use distance to land his power on Vallejos, but Vallejos did a great job avoiding those and getting in on Emmett. In fact, Vallejos landed an elbow that cut Emmett open within the first couple of minutes of the bout.
And then, one right hook cracked Emmett, putting him on wobbly legs. And from there, Vallejos attacked. He pounded away on Emmett, who could barely stand on his own two feet even when Vallejos wasn’t attacking. Vallejos continued to pour on the pressure until Emmett eventually went down and referee Herb Dean was forced to wave the fight off.
No one has done Emmett like that. That was the first time in his career that Emmett was stopped in the first round. I had a strong feeling and recommended a KO/TKO finish for Vallejos in the Best Bets piece for this event, but I was STUNNED that Vallejos got it done in just a few minutes.
In fact, it was just the second time Emmett has ever lost via KO/TKO. The only other time a fighter finished him in that kind of fashion? You’d have to go back to February 2018, when Jeremy Stephens did that. And even then, that was a second-round knockout.
If you want to say it’s time for Josh Emmett to hang up the gloves, fine. I’m not going to argue that. But considering Emmett’s resume, you can’t deny the impressiveness displayed by Vallejos.
And to be quite frank, if you’re not in the MMA social media picture, no one’s talking about Emmett losing. Everyone’s too busy trying to play matchmaker for Vallejos, who is going to be in the top-10 or top-11 at featherweight come Tuesday morning.
Maybe we will see a Jean Silva rematch now. Maybe he’s put up against another rising star like Zalal. Maybe another veteran (like Brian Ortega or Yair Rodriguez) or someone who has done more losing than winning (like Arnold Allen) is fed to him.
No matter what, one thing is clear. It’s time to give Kevin Vallejos yet another strong challenge. Why?
Because there’s a lot of agreement in the MMA community: Kevin Vallejos is for real.
