UNC And Michigan State Will Wear Ugly Camo Uniforms In Game On Aircraft Carrier
Now is as good of a time as any to remind the world that in just a week and a half, two premier college basketball programs will be playing an actual game that will actually count on a giant aircraft carrier on the water in San Diego. And they'll be doing so, it turns out, in camouflage jerseys that say "U.S.A." on the back. On Veterans Day.
If this were a Little League baseball game, Americana might collapse in on itself.
But since it's just college hoops, I think we're safe from that happening. And so are the players, who are wearing camouflage to honor the military:
"I think the uniforms are pretty cool," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said Monday as his team's uniforms were unveiled. "They definitely put the spotlight on our military and that's what this is for. I like that instead of player names, they put 'U.S.A.' on the back. For once, everybody can be on the same team.
"When I spent some time coaching the troops in Kuwait a few years ago, I was fortunate enough to get to wear fatigues twice. That was certainly a thrill for me, and if a player doesn't get a little more excited wearing this, there's something wrong."
To add to earnest Izzo's thoughts, there's also something lovely about the specificity of the jerseys, which are certainly very honorable but also quite ugly. (UNC's camo blue looks like it could have come out of a Deadhead's home tie dye kit.) The Spartans, as you can see, could hide against any rich person's half-bath wallpaper on earth, and you'd lose the Tar Heels in the shallow waters off of Anguilla immediately. The players had better take advantage of that.
