Watch How MLB's Crazy Tracking System Saw Yasiel Puig's Diving Catch
When MLB Advanced Media showed off its new fielding-tracking system at Sloan, it looked pretty great. But now that we're seeing it in action, this is just fantastic. Here are the numbers on Yasiel Puig's diving catch at Citi Field last month.
Puig got up to over 21 miles per hour, and his route efficiency—how straight a line he ran from where he started to where the ball ended up—was over 97 percent. Even if those aren't super telling without numbers on how efficient most fielders are (and even then, guys who loop under a ball to get in position to throw will have to be adjusted somehow), that's still a level of observation that should make every nerd giddy. The video is below, as are some screens for anyone who can't stream video from where they are.
