Read Braylon Edwards' $14 Million Slander Lawsuit Against The Busboys Who Said He Attacked Them
A little over a month ago, we brought you a couple stories about then-free-agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards—one about his troubled history and another about a murky nightclub brawl.
Edwards, who has since signed with the 49ers, says the busboys at South Bar, in Birmingham, Michigan, aren't telling the truth about what happened that night. So he's suing them for slander (among other things), and $14 million in damages, because, according to Edwards, an unnamed NFL team rescinded an offer with $15 million in guaranteed money. So he had to sign with the 49ers for only $1 million guaranteed.
Braylon's attorney, David Russell, told us, in a statement, "The events of that evening in question, including the false and malicious allegations directed towards Braylon, have damaged his reputation and earnings potential. The police, who have conducted a thorough investigation, have cleared Braylon of all wrong-doing and have placed the blame for the incident where it belongs—on the establishment and its employees. Braylon is not going to stand idly by while those responsible for the incident attempt to take advantage of his success and celebrity."
According to Edwards' complaint, a South busboy used a broom handle to block Edwards from leaving through the back door. He later charged Edwards and attacked him.
Edwards claims he later receives text messages that said South employees wanted money, otherwise they would talk to the press and complain to the police. The complaint further alleges that South and its employees later did make false and misleading statements to police and the press.
