A Grieving Rex Ryan Believes That If The Jets Make The Super Bowl, Darrelle Revis's Knee Could Be Ready
Which stage of grief is denial? Right, that's Stage 1. On Monday, when a really, really sad Rex Ryan announced that Darrelle Revis had indeed torn his ACL, the Jets coach said he wanted to talk to his star cornerback before putting him on season-ending injured reserve.
There wasn't really anything to discuss—an anterior cruciate ligament takes six to nine months to rehab. But Ryan had only just gotten the MRI results. Maybe he needed more time.
Still, no sense dragging things out. Putting Revis on injured reserve would allow the Jets to add an extra roster spot, at a time when the team desperately needs a few more warm bodies. Alas, Ryan's grieving process appears to only have reached Stage 3: bargaining. So today he said that he still wasn't ready to put Revis on the list. Why?
Oh, no. Rex, what? Seriously, what? The Jets are already trying to covert a running back—a very fast and not bad at all one— into a cornerback because they're desperate. But the coach still won't write off Revis, not when he might be able to come back in six months, which is basically almost five months, which is February, which is the one time when the team might need him most, if the patchwork secondary can just hold out till then. This also apparently means that the new, quieter, skinnier Ryan just sort of backhandedly guaranteed a trip to the Super Bowl. Jets fans can feel free to skip to Stage 4, depression.
